The Wise Hippo birthing programme promotes a positive birth experience, teaching deep relaxation techniques that can calm even the most anxious of mummies-to-be. This can empower you to trust in your body and to labour without fear. The techniques I teach are suitable for birth, labour and beyond, helping boost your inner calm and confidence!

In your Wise Hippo classes I use deep relaxation in two different ways:

Firstly, to help you change any fearful or negative expectations of birth you might have into positive ones. When we move into trance or deep relaxation, the conscious analytical side of the brain becomes side-tracked and we become much more open to suggestion (as we see with the stage hypnosis). Through positive language and imagery your focus will be on building your confidence in the knowledge that birth, without any special circumstances, can be a positive experience in which a woman remains, calm, relaxed and in control.

• Which brings me to my second point: you will learn simple yet powerful techniques that ensure that you are able to remain emotionally and physically relaxed during labour, enabling your body to work at its best. This in turn will also ensure that you are able to remain calm and in control throughout your labour, no matter what turn their birthing takes.

The Myths and Misconceptions surrounding hypnosis are often brought about by media and television portrayals of traditional stage hypnosis acts – I’m sure we have all heard of the person doing their finest chicken impressions!

How does this happen? Well, when a person agrees to be part of a hypnotic show they become willing participants and expect to be asked to do silly things, this allows the hypnotist to make them feel less inhibited and so they are happy to go along with the fun.

Will you be a chicken? Your own moral compass draws a firm line under what you will or will not do; if this happened, you would simply open your eyes and not carry on.

Did you know that hypnosis is a state we naturally go in and out of every day that can promote deep relaxation? (Daydreaming, enjoying a good movie and drifting off to sleep are just a few examples).
